Avoiding downtime and lost email when you move

A well-planned migration shouldn’t mean your website goes offline or your email goes missing. Here’s how we keep disruption to a minimum, and what you can do to help.

Keep your old hosting running

This is the single most important thing. Your old hosting keeps your website and email working until your domain is pointing at PAC and the change has fully taken effect.

Please don’t cancel your old hosting until we’ve confirmed your migration is complete and you’ve checked everything is working at PAC.

Why some visitors see the old site for a while

When your domain is switched to PAC, the change takes anywhere from a few minutes up to 24–48 hours to reach everyone on the internet (“propagation”). During that time, some visitors reach your new PAC hosting and others still reach your old host. Because both are running, your website stays online throughout.

How your email is handled

We copy the messages in your existing mailboxes across to PAC. During propagation, a few new emails may still arrive at your old host. As part of our final checks, we make sure these are brought across too, so nothing is lost.

If your email is with a separate provider, such as Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace, tell us before we start. We’ll make sure the records it relies on are carried across, so your email keeps flowing as normal.

Updating your email apps

Once your migration is complete, your email apps may need their settings updated to point at PAC. Our guides walk you through it:

You can also use webmail straight away, from any browser, with no setup needed.

Avoid website changes during the move

Changes made to your website on your old host after we’ve copied it won’t come across automatically. If you can, hold off on edits until the migration is complete, or let us know and we’ll help.

Questions about moving to PAC? Please speak to our sales team before you order, or open a support ticket if you’re already a customer. We’re happy to talk it through.
