How to set up your email on an Android phone or tablet

Before you start you will need your full email address and its password. If you haven’t created the mailbox yet, see how do I add a new email address. If you have forgotten the password you can reset your email password.

This guide shows you how to add your email account to the Gmail app on Android, so you can send and receive email on your phone or tablet. Most Android devices come with the Gmail app already installed, and it can handle any email address – not just Gmail ones.

We recommend IMAP as it keeps your email in sync across all your devices, so when you read or delete a message in one place it updates everywhere.

Open the Gmail app

Open the Gmail app. Tap your profile picture in the top right, then tap Add another account.

Choose account type

From the list of account types tap Other.

Enter your email address

Type your full email address, for example you@yourdomain.com, then tap Next. When asked what type of account, choose Personal (IMAP).

Enter your password

Enter your mailbox password and tap Next.

Replace yourdomain.com with your own domain name throughout. In almost all cases your mail server is simply mail. followed by your domain.

Incoming server settings

On the Incoming server settings screen enter:

  • Username: your full email address (you@yourdomain.com)
  • Password: your mailbox password
  • Server: mail.yourdomain.com

Tap Next.

Outgoing server settings

On the Outgoing server settings screen make sure Require sign-in is switched on, then enter:

  • SMTP server: mail.yourdomain.com
  • Username: your full email address
  • Password: your mailbox password

Tap Next.

The outgoing (SMTP) server needs your full email address and password too, even if the app suggests they are optional. Without them you will be able to receive email but not send it.

Finish up

Choose your sync options (the defaults are fine), tap Next, then enter the name you would like to appear on emails you send. Tap Next to finish. Your email will start to appear in the Gmail app – you’re all set up.

Settings reference

Setting Value
Incoming (IMAP) server mail.yourdomain.com

Outgoing (SMTP) server mail.yourdomain.com

Not receiving or sending mail? First check webmail in a browser to confirm your address and password are correct, then double-check the server name is mail.yourdomain.com and that SSL is switched on.
