What happens during your migration

Here’s what happens from the moment you ask for a migration to the moment your website is live at PAC.

1. We plan it with you

We confirm what’s being moved, check we have the access we need, and agree the timing. Most migrations are completed within 1–2 working days, and some can be done the same day by arrangement.

2. We copy everything across

We copy your websites, databases and email to your new PAC hosting. Your current website and email carry on working as normal while this happens.

3. We check it works

Before anything changes for your visitors, we check your websites are working properly on our servers.

4. We switch your domain over

Once everything’s ready, your domain needs to point at PAC instead of your old host. You can choose how this is done:

  • We do it for you. We’re happy to switch it over whether or not your domain is registered with us. If it’s registered elsewhere, we’ll need access to wherever your domain or DNS is managed.
  • You do it with our guidance. We’ll tell you exactly what to change and when. See how to update your domain’s nameservers.

Want to bring your domain to PAC too, so everything’s in one place? See how to transfer a domain to PAC Web Hosting. It’s often easiest to do this after your migration is complete.

5. The change spreads across the internet

After the switch, it can take anywhere from a few minutes up to 24–48 hours for the change to reach everyone (this is called “propagation”). During that time, some visitors may still see your old host. This is why it’s important to keep your old hosting running for now. See avoiding downtime and lost email when you move.

6. Final checks

Once your domain is pointing at PAC, we make sure everything is working, including any email that arrived at your old host during the switch.

That’s it – you’re with PAC. Next, see what to check after your migration.
