How to set up your email in Mozilla Thunderbird

Before you start you will need your full email address and its password. If you haven’t created the mailbox yet, see how do I add a new email address. If you have forgotten the password you can reset your email password.

This guide shows you how to add your PAC email account to Mozilla Thunderbird, the free email program for Windows, Mac and Linux.

We recommend IMAP as it keeps your email in sync across all your devices, so when you read or delete a message in one place it updates everywhere.

Start adding your account

Open Thunderbird. If it’s your first account you’ll be prompted automatically; otherwise go to the menu (three lines, top right) and choose New > Existing Mail Account.

Enter your details

Fill in:

  • Your name: the name to appear on emails you send
  • Email address: your full email address (you@yourdomain.com)
  • Password: your mailbox password

Click Configure manually.

Replace yourdomain.com with your own domain name throughout. In almost all cases your mail server is simply mail. followed by your domain.

Enter your server settings

Incoming server

  • Protocol: IMAP
  • Server: mail.yourdomain.com
  • Port: 993
  • Connection security: SSL/TLS
  • Authentication: Normal password
  • Username: your full email address

Outgoing server (SMTP)

  • Server: mail.yourdomain.com
  • Port: 465
  • Connection security: SSL/TLS
  • Authentication: Normal password
  • Username: your full email address

Click Re-test, then Done.

The outgoing (SMTP) server needs your full email address and password too, even if the app suggests they are optional. Without them you will be able to receive email but not send it.

Finish up

Thunderbird will confirm the settings and add your account. Your email will begin to download – you’re all set up.

Settings reference

Setting Value
Incoming (IMAP) server mail.yourdomain.com

Outgoing (SMTP) server mail.yourdomain.com

Not receiving or sending mail? First check webmail in a browser to confirm your address and password are correct, then double-check the server name is mail.yourdomain.com and that SSL is switched on.
