How to manage spam filtering for your email

Every email address includes spam filtering. Each incoming email is given a spam score – the higher the score, the more likely it is to be spam – and what happens to it depends on your settings. The defaults suit most people, but you can adjust them for each address.

First, log in to your Enhance panel – see how to login to Enhance Panel. If you only have an email address and no panel login, ask whoever manages your hosting to do this for you.

Open your spam settings

  1. Select Websites in the left side bar, then select the website your email address belongs to.
  2. Select Emails in the menu along the top. You’ll see a list of your email accounts.
  3. Open the menu (⋮) next to the email address and select Manage.
  4. Select Spam settings in the menu on the left (or scroll down).

What the settings mean

There are three levels. Each has a slider: moving it towards Strict (a lower number) catches more spam, but may also catch some genuine emails. Moving it towards Permissive (a higher number) lets more through.

SettingWhat happens to emails with a score above itDefault
SpamboxDelivered to a folder called Spam, which you can check in webmail or your email app4
GreylistTemporarily turned away. Genuine mail servers try again after about 5 minutes, and the email is accepted the second time. Most spam senders don’t retry6
RejectRefused completely. The sender usually gets a message saying it wasn’t delivered8

We recommend leaving these at their defaults. If a genuine sender keeps ending up in Spam, add them to your Allow list (below) rather than making the filter less strict for everyone.

Always allow or block a sender

Under Allow/block list:

  • Allow – enter an email address and select Allow. Emails from that address skip the spam filters, so they always reach your inbox.
  • Block – enter an email address and select Block. Emails from that address are refused.

Only add senders you trust to your Allow list. Spammers often fake the sender’s address, so allowing a common address can let spam through.

Check your Spam folder

Emails caught by the Spambox setting aren’t deleted – they go to your Spam folder. It’s worth checking it now and then, in webmail or your email app, in case something genuine has been caught.

Webmail can also empty the Spam folder for you: in webmail, go to Settings > Preferences > Server Settings and look for Permanently delete messages in the spam folder.
