Set up your email on an iPhone or iPad

Before you start you will need your full email address and its password. If you haven’t created the mailbox yet, see how do I add a new email address. If you have forgotten the password you can reset your email password.

This guide shows you how to add your email account to the Mail app on an iPhone or iPad, so you can send and receive email on the go. The screens are the same on both devices.

We recommend IMAP as it keeps your email in sync across all your devices, so when you read or delete a message in one place it updates everywhere.

Open your email settings

On your iPhone or iPad, open the Settings app, scroll down and tap Apps, then tap Mail.

Add a new account

Tap Mail Accounts, then tap Add Account.

Choose account type

From the list of account types tap Other (at the very bottom), then tap Add Mail Account.

Enter your details

Fill in the New Account screen:

  • Name – the name you would like to appear on emails you send
  • Email – your full email address, for example you@yourdomain.com
  • Password – your mailbox password
  • Description – any label you like, for example “Work email”

Tap Next in the top right.

Make sure IMAP is selected

At the top of the next screen tap IMAP (it is usually selected already and highlighted).

Enter your incoming and outgoing servers

Scroll down to the Incoming Mail Server and Outgoing Mail Server sections and enter the following:

Replace yourdomain.com with your own domain name throughout. In almost all cases your mail server is simply mail. followed by your domain.

Incoming Mail Server

  • Host Name: mail.yourdomain.com
  • User Name: your full email address (you@yourdomain.com)
  • Password: your mailbox password

Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP)

  • Host Name: mail.yourdomain.com
  • User Name: your full email address (you@yourdomain.com)
  • Password: your mailbox password

The outgoing server user name and password are not optional, even though your phone may say they are. Please enter them, otherwise you will be able to receive email but not send it.

Tap Next. Your device will check the settings, which can take a minute.

Save your account

Once your settings are verified, tap Save. Your email account is now added.

Open the Mail app and your messages will begin to download. That’s it – you’re all set up.

Your device sets these automatically, but if you ever need to check them manually you can confirm the following:

Setting Value
Incoming (IMAP) server mail.yourdomain.com
Incoming port 993
Incoming security (SSL) On
Outgoing (SMTP) server mail.yourdomain.com
Outgoing port 465
Outgoing security (SSL) On
User name (both) Your full email address

Not receiving or sending mail? First check webmail in a browser to confirm your address and password are correct, then double-check the server name is mail.yourdomain.com and that SSL is switched on.
