FTP lets you upload and manage your website’s files using an FTP program such as FileZilla. It’s handy for uploading lots of files at once, or for giving a web designer access to your files without giving them your Enhance login.
Create an FTP account
- Select Websites in the left side bar, then select the website you want to manage.
- In the menu along the top, open the Advanced drop-down and select FTP.
- Select Add account.
- Enter a Username. Your domain is added to the end automatically, so the full username looks like [email protected].
- Enter a Password, or use the key icon to generate a strong one. It needs at least 10 characters, including a lowercase letter, an uppercase letter, a number and a special character.
- Choose the Directory the account can access (see below).
- Select Add.
Choosing the directory
- Leave it as / to give access to your website’s whole home folder.
- Enter a folder, for example
public_html, to limit the account to that folder and everything inside it. This is a good idea when giving access to someone else.
Your connection details
To see the exact details for an account, open the menu (⋮) next to it in the FTP accounts list. Under Login credentials you’ll find the Username, Host and Port, each with a copy button.
Connecting with your FTP program
In your FTP program (for example FileZilla, or Transmit on a Mac), enter:
| Setting | What to enter |
|---|---|
| Protocol / encryption | FTP with TLS/SSL (sometimes called explicit FTP over TLS) |
| Host / server | ftp.yourdomain.com, or the Host shown in your account’s login credentials |
| Port | 21 |
| Username | The full username, including @yourdomain.com |
| Password | The password you set |
Managing an FTP account
Open the menu (⋮) next to an account to manage it:
- Password – select Reset to set a new password.
- Directory access – use the pencil icon to change which folder the account can reach.
- Delete – remove the account completely.
