How to connect to your website using SSH

SSH gives you secure command-line access to your website’s files, for developers and experienced users. Most website owners never need it.

First, log in to your Enhance panel – see how to login to Enhance Panel.

Before you start: ask us to allow your IP address

To keep our servers secure for every customer, SSH access is only allowed from IP addresses we’ve approved. Connections from any other address are blocked, even with the correct password or key.

  • If you have a static IP address, one that never changes, we can add it for you.
  • If your IP address is dynamic but rarely changes, as with many home and office broadband connections, we can usually add it too. If it changes, just ask us to update it.

To request access, open a support ticket telling us the website and the IP address you’ll connect from. To find your IP address, search for “what is my IP” from the computer you’ll be connecting from.

SSH access is added on request only. If your connection times out or is refused, the most likely reason is that your IP address hasn’t been added yet, or has changed.

Find your SSH details

  1. Select Websites in the left side bar, then select the website you want to manage.
  2. In the menu along the top, open the Advanced drop-down and select Developer tools.
  3. Select SSH password authentication in the menu on the left (or scroll down).

You’ll see the Login command to use in your terminal, which includes your username and server address, and a copy button to copy it.

Connect with a password

  1. Copy the Login command and paste it into your terminal.
  2. Enter your SSH password when asked.

Don’t know your password, or want to change it? Select Reset next to Password to set a new one.

Connect with an SSH key (more secure)

  1. Select SSH key manager in the menu on the left.
  2. Select Add and paste in your public key.

Only ever paste your public key (usually ending in .pub). Never share your private key with anyone, including us.

Use a strong, unique SSH password. Anyone with your SSH details can change or delete your website’s files.
