How to restore a backup of your website or email

Your hosting is backed up automatically twice a day, and the last 30 days of backups are kept. Plans with our premium 4-hourly backups are backed up every four hours instead. Backups are stored off-server and don’t count towards your disk space.

You can restore your whole website, just the files or databases you need, all your email, or just particular mailboxes – from any backup in the list.

First, log in to your Enhance panel – see how to login to Enhance Panel.

Open your backups

  1. Select Websites in the left side bar, then select the website you want to manage.
  2. Select Backups in the menu along the top.

Each line in the list is one backup, with the date and time it was taken.

Automatic backups are labelled AUTOMATIC.

  • Website backups show the size of your files and the number of databases.
  • Email backups are listed on their own separate lines, marked with an envelope icon and the number of mailboxes.

Restoring your website

On the website backup you want, select Restore and choose either Full website or Custom.

Full website

This restores all your website’s files and databases to how they were at the time of the backup. You’ll be asked to confirm before anything happens.

Any changes made to your website since that backup will be deleted and may not be recoverable, and you won’t be able to make changes to the website while the restore runs. If you only need part of your website back, use Custom instead.

Custom

This lets you choose exactly what to bring back from the backup, and leaves everything else as it is now.

  1. Choose the Files tab to pick files and folders, or the Databases tab to pick databases.
  2. Tick what you’d like to restore. Your website’s files are in the public_html folder.
  3. Select Restore now.

Restoring a single database doesn’t restore its database users. If you need the users back too, restore all databases.

Restoring your email

On the email backup you want (the line with the envelope icon), select Restore and choose either All mailboxes or Custom. These two options work very differently:

Option What it does
All mailboxes Restores all your mailboxes and aliases to exactly how they were at the time of the backup. Any messages received since then will be deleted.
Custom Lets you choose which mailboxes to restore. Messages from the backup are merged with the email already there, so nothing you have now is removed.

Looking for a deleted email? Custom is usually the safer choice. It brings back messages from the backup without removing anything that has arrived since.

Use All mailboxes only if you want to put every mailbox back exactly as it was. You won’t be able to make changes to the website while the restore runs.

Would rather we did it?

Just open a support ticket telling us what you’d like restored and roughly when from, and we’ll do it for you.

Backups are a safeguard, not a guarantee. It’s good practice to keep your own copies of anything important too.
