How to change the PHP version of your website

PHP is the programming language that powers most websites, including WordPress. Newer versions are faster and more secure, but older websites and plugins aren’t always compatible with them.

Check your website is compatible before changing. Some PHP versions include changes that can break older themes, plugins or code. Take a backup first – see how to create a manual backup – so you can switch back easily.

First, log in to your Enhance panel – see how to login to Enhance Panel.

Change the PHP version

  1. Select Websites in the left side bar, then select the website you want to manage.
  2. In the menu along the top, open the Advanced drop-down and select Developer tools.
  3. In the PHP section, find Change the PHP version for your website.
  4. Choose the version you want from the drop-down and confirm the change.

You can also see your current PHP version on your website’s home page, in the At a glance box.

Which version should I choose?

  • Versions labelled Latest version or LTS are supported and receive security updates.
  • Versions with no label have reached end of life and no longer receive security fixes. Avoid these unless your software needs them, and plan to upgrade.

Any addon domains on the same website use the same PHP version as the main domain. After changing, check your website and its admin area work as expected. If anything breaks, switch back to the previous version.
